The remains of a stone-paved square were found by workers who are renovating Agia Sofia railway station in Thessaloniki. This archaeological finding is unique, as a similar example of urban architecture had been found only in Jordan.
The square was made from natural stone. The area was covered by processed marble plates. According to the initial expertise, the remains of this ancient square most probably date back to 6th century. The exact date when the square was built, however, will be known after more detailed examinations. It is worth to mention that archaeologists who had examined this area some time before had discovered a Byzantine alley nearby. According to the scientists, the square is its extension in straight line. Unfortunately, the stone-paved square is not in good condition. It resembles the poor condition of the Byzantine avenue. According to some scientists, only a part of the uncovered complex should be renovated and then open to public. The Greek Archaeological Council will decide about the future of this ancient plaza soon.
