Renovation works of an object situated just by the famous Spanish steps have come to an end. The fountain which was carved in white travertine is dazzling tourists again.
A small Barcaccia water effect was made in 1623 by Pietro Bernini and commissioned by Pope Urban VIII. Its shape resembles trading boats which were used those days. The fountain commemorates a flood which took place at Christmas in 1598. A strong current of the Tiber River made one of such boats drift to the square and bury in the mud. Renovation works were necessary because the destroyed water effect had not been renovated for a long time. Therefore, the city authorities ordered the renovation in October last year. The first phase included careful filling of the gaps in the stone, removing dust and layers of smog from the white travertine as well as removing the limestone layer.
