A nationwide competition for creating a land use plan of the future Geopark will start soon. The competition is now being preceded by consultations with the residents and entrepreneurs.
The project includes creating an interactive educational place in a closed excavation located in Kazimierz Dolny. This interactive educational centre is supposed to be created as a part of Geopark of the Lesser Polish Gorge of the Vistula project, in which seven communes situated by the Vistula river take part. The land use plan supports this investment, because the area of former quarries will be used for tourism-related investments. According to the initial concepts, the areas will include a reproduced Cretaceous sea, educational sites as well as an exhibition emphasising the role of quarries in the history of Kazimierz Dolny.
- We are planning, for example, to build a cable-car that will connect Kazimierz and Janowiec, to open the Earth Centre in the quarry area, to revitalise the castle hill in Bochotnica, the Oleśniccy chapel and Bochotnica caves, as well as to create new didactical paths – says Grzegorz Dunia, the mayor.
The idea of creating a museum was supported by 2010-2011 scientific research carried out by the Warsaw University, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University and the Polish Geological Institute. The museum aims to be interactive and in the future the area will be used for hosting open-air sculptures and geological fairs.
