Due to closing the air space over European countries (as a result of the volcanic ash coming from Iceland to a great part of Europe) EUROROC meeting of the International Federation of Natural Stone Industries which was scheduled on 23 April in Vienna was cancelled.
Thirty stonemasons from the stone company owned by Jan Siuta (in Cholerzyn near Cracow) were working hard to be on time with making and installing a sarcophagus in the Wawel Castle in which the President Lech Kaczyński and the First Lady were laid to rest. The Presidential Couple died tragically in the air crash near Smolensk. The tomb is in a cuboid shape with sizes 200 x 140 x 100 cm. It has been made from a honey coloured onyx.
From Friday, 19 March, to Sunday, 21 March, Czocha Castle in Leśna (Lubań district) hosted the 13th General Meeting of the Employers Association of Stone Industry. Due to the 10th anniversary of the association, the president, Stanisław Sitarz, on behalf of the whole board, handed special diplomas to the owners and presidents of the companies which have been the members of the association since it was established.
In order to get to Szczecin through the frozen Bay of Szczecin an ice breaker must be used, but not in case of Aura. M/v Aura, built in the ship repair yard in Gdańsk, is adapted to work in winter time. Its ice class is 1A. Aura is carrying an unusual loading: over 3100 tons of granite blocks from Finnish ship yards, said Mariusz Januszkiewicz from Magemar company.
