MEDIATION SEEMS INNOVATIVE

Time is money, but the average waiting time to get an instrument permitting enforcement in Poland was as long as 584 days last year. When conflicting parties used mediator's services, they reached a consensus on financial receivables within 30 days. Moreover, the mediation fee was only 25% of the court fee and these are not all savings.

Managing conflicts, moderating discussions, softening emotions – more and more people are learning mediation craft. Fairness and impartiality, confidentiality, humility and the knowledge of communication techniques are features and skills of a mediator. Mediator's duty is always the same: to bring a lasting resolution to the conflict and reach an agreement which is good for all the parties involved.

WAITING FOR STABILITY

The beginning of this season is, undoubtedly, a temporary situation. Although the majority of important players updated their price lists at the beginning of the year, it sometimes happens that the difference in price of the same material reaches up to 30% because some wholesales or smaller trading companies are selling their materials from last year for old price.

What does the wholesale natural stone market look like, what tendencies can we notice and, finally, what is the condition of companies operating in Poland? Like every year we asked a group of entrepreneurs these questions. Some of our interviewees admit that prices (not only of materials) settled so far in euro got higher (we predicted that in our article in the previous issue of Świat Kamienia). Some nervous moves can be expected from the companies which have so far bought stone in American currency and sold it in euro.

NEW ORDER

Stone will make your immovable properties keep their value – this slogan takes a special meaning, because 2015 will be known for unprecedented rise of imported stone prices. Should we blame dollar rate, which got stronger by 25% and became expensive compared to other currencies? Opinions are divided here.

Most of our interviewees predict that the price rise of imported stone will reach as much as 30% by the end of the year. In case of a permanent lack of “colour” supplies from diminishing deposits, the prices will be even higher despite the growing demand for ready-made products in residential construction. Low interest rates and huge EU funds dedicated to infrastructural projects will surely improve the situation in this branch.

WHO'LL GIVE ME WINGS?

Past experiences of craft businesses expose deficiencies of education system in Poland. It is very hard nowadays to find a well-qualified young man. The situation is alarming because one of the greatest advantages of stone workshops was cultivating family traditions which were passed down from generation to generation.

The number of young people who want to gain qualifications in craft professions is smaller and smaller every year. The root causes lie in education system, but also in insufficient promotion of the craft and no benefits arising from having journeyman and artisan certificates. Years of neglect revealed the weakness of the reform of education carried out by then-Minister of Education (M. Handke) in the government of Jerzy Buzek and undoubtedly damaged the balance on the labour market.

The system of education which was being promoted for years made contemporary parents think that vocational schools are really bad, because being a journeyman is not as prestigious as holding a Master of Arts degree. What is the result? In Poland the concentration of higher schools is one of the highest in the world. The graduates have no prospects for further professional development whilst at the same time there are far too few people with specified qualifications. Our Internet survey revealed facts which might be very telling. Its results made us think that the mostly desired employee is … an unemployed person who badly needs work.

STONE REVOLUTIONS

It happened and it seems to be a permanent division of Polish stone branch scene. This is how we can summarise the fair events we were present at in Wrocław and, shortly after, in Poznań. In our report from KAMIEŃ and STONE fairs we are wondering about likely scenarios in the future.

Let us start from some historical facts. Till 2008 it was the branch fair in Wrocław which had international aspirations. In the years 2009-2013 it was the fair in Poznań. In its short history Kamień-Stone fair had a high reputation and was treated as the biggest business event in stone branch in Central and Eastern Europe in spite of the fact that since 2011 the number of both exhibitors and visitors has been getting lower and lower. A result? First, a boycott of Kamień-Stone 2013 fair by Confindustria Marmomacchine (an association that represents leading Italian companies) and shortly after the information from the director of the Group of International Products of Poznań International Fair that the November edition of the fair was held for the last time and from now on we are going to meet at Stone event together with participants of the Trade Fair of Church Furnishings, Liturgical Objects and Devotional Items Sakralia as well as the Funeral Fair Memento.

15TH BIRTHDAY OF “ŚWIATA KAMIENIA”

The first issue appeared in November 1999. For 15 years now we have been offering you a convenient and effective tool to communicate with people interested in latest news from stone, construction, architecture and design branches. Anniversaries are good times to have a look back in history. Let us take a sentimental trip then.

Necessity is usually the mother of invention. The origin of the title of our magazine confirms this. Late 20th century was the time when the only obstacle for rapidly developing stone branch in Poland was lack of reliable information. The idea of creating a professional stone magazine was quickly brought to life. At the 9th “Kamień” fair in Wałbrzych the core group of editors was formed. Since that time our subscribers have been getting latest issues of ŚK six times a year. In total, over 90 issues in 15 years.

100 YEARS OF … LONELINESS?

We can seldom hear even quite optimistic assessment of the situation. What we can see is the general distrust. It is sometimes caused by anger. Any diagnosis? Profitability of extraction raises questions about the existence of smallest mines. Bigger players are placing their hopes in the new financial perspective (2014-2020).

Forecasts for the coming 2-3 years are moderately optimistic. Gabion, hydro-technical, and, of course, building stones – the demand for these materials exceeds supply. It is interesting if we take into consideration that 2 years ago everyone could hear about over-production of mines. The (technological) gap is also getting bigger between large extraction plants and smallest ones, which often produce stone as a fully processed good only for their own use. All of them share one thing – irritation, because stone, which is historically recorded and seen in many architectural jewels, is not perceived in Poland as a national treasure at all. What is worse, every stone mine, even the smallest one, is a mining plant, which means a lot of administrative restrictions. The mining fee is still raising a lot of controversies in Poland. Can a mining plant be a venue of mass events and gain additional profits out of this? We were talking about this issue a few issues back.

BIG PLAYERS WILL BE MORE EFFECTIVE

What does natural stone wholesale market look like? What tendencies can we observe there? And, finally, what is the condition of the companies operating in Poland? Like every year, we asked those questions to the group of entrepreneurs. Their answers made us suppose that further process of concentration of companies under famous brands will continue.
In Poland there are nearly a hundred companies which deal with wholesale trade of stone in blocks, slabs and plates. Biggest players own a few, sometimes several, points of sale. Granit-Color is an exception here. This company has a network of 30 partner wholesale stores situated mainly in the south and east of Poland. Profitability of companies which deal with wholesale trade of natural stone is often related to high risk which results from the seasonality of demand. High season starts in April and finishes in October. Then the number of construction works is the highest. Did mild winter make the season start earlier than usual? Opinions are divided.

GOOD TIME FOR SPA & WELLNESS IS COMING

Coming years will be prosperous for wellness branch, and Polish companies have a big chance to take advantage of it. Experienced stonemasons may be given an unusual opportunity to carry out individual projects and make their customers’ ideas come true. Many architects believe that the most lucrative orders are still ahead of them!
Contemporary bathrooms, no matter if they are in private houses or public places, stopped being treated only as personal hygiene related places. So is the case with interesting changes that commercial buildings (which originate from European spiritual and material culture) are undergoing. Ancient Greeks and Romans were first who noticed the unbreakable bond between physical and mental health. All of us heard about famous Roman baths which in time turned into huge leisure centres which attracted a lot of people. The time of their prosperity is as early as 1 century BC. It was in the Roman baths where social life, and sometimes a political one, of the ancient polis was led. Except for rooms with pools, there were also massage parlours, playgrounds, libraries, rooms for playing dice, and even cafes. The fact that the baths became much less popular as the Roman Empire was coming to its end is another story.

A SOUND MIND IN A PIT

Aggregate pits may be perfect places for doing such sports as downhill, enduro and other two- and four-wheeled vehicle sports, whilst block pits with their excavations may be ideal for wakeboarding, jumping into water, climbing, diving, etc. They may be, but for sure they are not, at least not in Poland.

The text below may serve as an introduction to the discussion on the advantages of rehabilitation of mining sites and changing them into sports venues. Late 20th century is the time when searching for new forms of activities and … emotions has begun. This also includes promoting new forms of qualified tourism and extreme sports. Thanks to the development of various technologies, those who are looking for active contact with nature and strong emotions are breaking stereotypes. The feeling of satisfaction reaches new dimensions.
