The projects by Dominika Falkowska (in the category of a tombstone worth up to 8,000 zlotys (2,000 euro), by Grzegorz Kenig (in the category of a tombstone up to 15,000 zlotys (3,750 euro) and by Piotr Tumidajski...
(in the category of more than 15,000 zlotys worth tombstone) won the modern tombstone competition organised by the Warsaw branch of SARP (The Association of Polish Architects) and by the Capital Conservator. The winners will receive 4,000 zlotys (1,000 euro) each. Their projects, just like the works of 15 honoured with a distinction, will be included in a special template which will be used by old cemetery tombstone makers. The aim of the competition was to show that we can get rid of routines and Asian models which are now flooding even the oldest cemeteries in Poland.
38 projects have been sent, most of them are simple geometrical models, a body with a cross in one colour like the prize-winning project by Dominika Falkowska, a student of the Technical University in Gdansk, who presented a rectangular slab with a cross-shaped hollow. There were also some more sophisticated projects. The prize-winning project in the category of a tombstone worth up to 15,000 zlotys is a horizontal slab out of which vertical posts with a cross-shaped slots grow.
For each use of the project in the template its author will get 50 zlotys (ca. 13 euro). The template, however, is not obligatory for tombstone makers. If a stonemason suggests something, it will be done. We need to say that this competition concerns old cemeteries situated in Warsaw.
