Building the monument commemorating the prisoners from the Gross-Rosen Nazi concentration camp in Rogoźnica near Strzegom has entered the first stage.
The winning tenders have been selected in the following areas: the preparation of a planning map, carrying out archaeological research in the quarry area during earthworks, performing the function of statutory supervisor and the promotion of Kamienne Piekło (the stone hell) project.
We were writing about the project two years ago when the winners of the architectural competition were announced and collecting funds started. A massive monument was designed by Mirosław Nizio. In Gross-Rosen we are going to find massive concrete stairs which are situated in the place where there used to be a walkway for the prisoners. A huge metal barrier, which conceals the quarry, adds to the atmosphere of tension and anxiety. Behind the barrier there is a viewing platform with the view of the walls of the historical pit. Down in the water there is to be a cemetery candle a cuboid made of black granite. In the metal crypt prisoner numbers are to be cut out and daily light will penetrate through them. The names of the murdered prisoners are going to be engraved in stone.
The aim of the project is to commemorate the place of execution of prisoners who were taken to murderous work which included granite extraction. It is estimated that 40,000 people who had different nationalities died in Gross-Rosen. The cost of work is estimated to be between 20-30 million zlotys (5-6 million euro).
