The fountain was renovated in 1991 and in 2000. The complex renovation of the famous baroque fountain will cost 2.5 million euro. – We have to carry out complete renovation works because in many places the structure is very weak and we can see the signs of very old problems – said the mayor of the eternal city Gianni Alemanno.
A part of the marble cornice has fallen out of the baroque fountain before holidays. Some big parts have been preventively removed because they could have broken away. The parts of incredibly rich stucco were also destroyed – the acanthus leaves from the capital, among others. This is going to be the biggest renovation since Di Trevi was unveiled on 22 May 1762 after 30 years of building it.
The fountain was built on the initiative of the pope Clement XII in the place of the previous one. The project of Niccolo Salvi won then – it integrated water cascades and sculptures of mythological figures into the facade of the building. Present inhabitants of Rome associate this fountain more with the film “Dolce Vita” by Frederico Fellini. The movie fans remember the scene when Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni are bathing in the fountain at night.
