Among many budget-saving proposals, there is also a project of a radical reduction of funeral allowances.
Today it is 6632 PLN (ca. 1660 euro) and is much higher than the EU average. The proposal arouses a lot of controversies. The funeral industry is strongly protesting against the reduction whilst the supporters of the reduction say that the funeral fees are so high because the allowance from the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) is high. If the reduction proposal comes into force, the stone industry will also lose. The Polish Funeral Chamber wants to submit an official protest against the reduction of the funeral allowance to the Prime Minister.
The chamber authorities say that the government would lose by reducing the allowance since, as they estimate, it would cause many job losses. Several thousand people would lose their jobs. The governmental plan expects to reduce the allowance to 3,500 zlotys (ca. 875 euro) and by this it would save 1,4 billion zlotys. A great popularity of cheap Chinese tombstones shows that the tradition of rich burials is changing very quickly. Many people cannot afford or they do not want to pay for the burial and a place of commemoration more than the amount of the funeral allowance is. The reduction would mostly affect the stone sector which produces the cheapest tombstones and the sellers of Chinese tombstones.
