STONE AGE FIGURE IN TURKEY
Ancient work of art that shows a naked woman is over 8,000 years old. It was discovered by a team from Stanford University. In that team there were also Polish scientists. This interesting discovery was made in a famous neolithic site Çatal Hüyük. It is located in central Turkey, in the south part of the Anatolian Upland. The town is one of the world's oldest settlements with clear urban features. It is as big as a small modern town or a big village. It was founded about 9,500 years ago on two hills between which the river was flowing. It is estimated that 3,500 – 8,000 people might have lived there.
The small figure was carefully laid together with a piece of obsidian beneath a low platform on the floor of one of the houses which was built 6,000 years before Christ. The figurine shows a fat figure with sagging breasts and belly which appears to stand in opposition to modern canons of beauty. This over 1 kilogram work of art was made with much care. A part of marble was polished and then naturalist details were carved in it. They are a bun of the top of the head, eyes, a nose, small lips and big chin. The hands were put under the sagging breasts and just over a fat roll on the abdomen. According to the scientists, the stone figurine most probably shows a respected woman who belongs to the elders of the family or clan. She achieved a high status in her community. This is rather not an object of any cult.
