FORMER QUARRY WILL GAIN NEW LIFE
Architects from Instytut Dizajnu (design institute) along with representatives of Geopark have designed a concept of Wietrznia land development. According to the submitted project, the former quarry in Kielce might change into a knowledge triangle.
Consultations on the revitalisation of this place took a whole year. It turned out that Kielce inhabitants want to implement subtle changes to make this closed quarry site a place for entertainment or recreation. According to the designers' idea, weathering steel will be the main element of the whole complex. This material will be used to make seats, barriers, bicycle racks or litter bins. Some elements will be made of treated wood. Seats that look like fossilized brachiopods will be able to be arranged freely. Another thing the architects proposed are hardened paths and stairs with gaps. They also suggested building a viewing terrace in the highest point of Międzygórze Wschodnie.
Limestones and dolomites were quarried here in 1970s. Today Wietrznia reserve is a perfect place for walks, but, above all, for learning about geological history of the region. The development of the land of a closed quarry is a part of a bigger project that includes, among others, building tourist infrastructure in Kadzielnia reserve, modernizing the exhibition in Geocentrum as well as building a garden of experience. The whole project will cost several millions zlotys and will be co-financed from the European Union funds.
