Column is another basic element typical of ancient buildings. The main thing here is to put a loading in the axis of the column. Greek columns, but also Roman ones, were neither massive nor too slender. Using modern terminology we could say that they were characterised by a significant slenderness.
Until the arches were applied, the span of columns was small because beams which were put on the heads had a small bending capacity. Columns were built of full circles, which were often, but not always, linked by stone blocks and later by lead. Columns, apart from its constructive role, had another role: they made the streets and towns look more beautiful.
