STONE STATUE OF RAMSES THE GREAT FOUND IN CAIRO

posag ramzesaThis huge monument made of sandstone has been discovered in the slum of Cairo, under the deep layer of mud and ground. The bust, lower parts of the head, the crown – the remains of this ancient statue prove that the sculpture was nearly 8 metres high.
According to the scientists, it was made 3,000 years ago. This discovery was made near the temple founded by Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great. Right now this area is called El Matarey and is settled by poor working class. The scientists think that the location of Ramses II temple of the sun is a clear hint as regards the figure the statue depicted.

The team of Egyptian and German archaeologists unearthed this enormous obelisk in early March. The whole operation was observed by media and local people who were equipped with cameras. This find has already been recognised as one of the most important in the last years. It shows how huge the Ramses temple of the sun used to be and demonstrates his power. Ramses the Great was the third Pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty, the son and heir to Setti I. He was one of the most prominent rulers of ancient Egypt. Ramses II is said to have ruled his country between 1279 and 1213 BC. He was greater than all his predecessors. He filled Egypt with buildings and statues of gods which were erected for the glory of the state. According to most archaeologists, Ramses II times were the times of prosperity and stability.

Parts of the statue will go to the Grand Egyptian Museum which is scheduled to open next year.
