A FORMER QUARRY REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT HAS BEEN SELECTED

kamieniołomA heated discussion about the quarry led to organising a competition which was financed from external funds under the 2007-2013 Technical Assistance Operational Programme from the European Regional Development Fund

and the State budget under the project entitled „Programming activities of communes functionally related to the town of Puławy in order to establish the Urban Functional Area of the Town of Puławy. This is the first stage of the project which aims at regeneration of the former quarry site in Kazimierz Dolny and its closest surroundings with the total area of about 10 hectares.
The winning concept assumes creating a building with exhibition rooms, a square for festivals and concerts and a swimming pool by the Vistula River. Architectural Studio „Marka” from Puławy is in charge of the project. The winning concept includes, among others, building an exhibition hall, a place for festivals and concerts, a swimming pool by the Vistula River as well as creating lookout decks with a lift, a sensory garden and an open-air gym. There will be also a stone sculpture which will make the site of a former quarry even more attractive.

The second position (a distinction funded by Kazimierz Dolny commune authorities) went to  the project by Bogdan Stelmach's team. However, it was the project which won the third place that received the biggest applause of the inhabitants who were present at the ceremony. We are mentioning it because the competition regulations do not force the commune to use the winning concept. The designers who are close to the Strzegom stone branch are in charge of the project which got the third position. Their names are Katarzyna Zych – Głuszyńska and Agata Zych – Wcisło with their team. Their project shows geological and mining uniqueness of this site. The main purpose of the project is to revive a closed quarry, which is one of the elements of the planned „Małopolska Gorge of the Vistula River” Geopark and to revive the natural bank of the river. The didactic path is the most important here: „a geological time machine” which includes the main passageway, a didactic building with an interactive geological exhibition and a virtual visit in the open quarry presenting traditional and modern extraction of rock minerals. The project also assumes using natural materials such as wood, stone (Kazimierz Dolny rocks) and defining a geological path. The commercial part includes a natural bathing water complex and a commercial building complex.
