THE MONUMENT MADE OF SŁAWNIOWICE MARBLE IN NORMANDY

sławniowice2The monument will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Hill 262. The monument will be raised in Falaise region, where Polish troops fought one of their most famous battles. In August 1944 heroic attitude of General Maczek’s soldiers allowed for surrounding two German armies in Normandy and, as a result, beating 7 Wehrmacht divisions in the so-called Falaise Pocket.

The monument will be also the last stage of the Project “The European Road of Peace”
(La Voie Europeenne de la Paix) – which is about building over 50 monuments on the way from Paris to Moscow. Nearly 50 artists from 12 countries are involved in this initiative. The French, who would like the last monument to be made by a Polish artist, got to like the idea of making a pedestal of Polish marble from Sławniowice. The monument itself, depicting two wings, will be made of marble imported from Carrara. This nearly three-meter tall monument will have an abstract form. Its shape will refer to Hussar wings, which is a symbol of the 1st Armoured Division. The project of the obelisk named “The Wings of Peace” won the competition organised by the local authorities. The author of the winning concept is Monika Osiecka, one of the most renowned Polish sculptors abroad. Her works can be seen in many countries across Europe.
