The monument was unveiled just before the release of EVE Fanfest 2014 (on 30 April), a science-fiction video game. The game is set in far future, and players who are going to fight for the leadership in space may become, among others, characters who are exploring mines.
The competition takes place on just one server, which means that all the players are in the same Universe. The current record is 63,170 logged players. The monument which symbolises this imagined world was erected in order to honour the Eve Online players, whose accounts were active on 1 March this year. On the left there is a plinth with a quotation adapted from the game, which was made of black aluminium casting. On the right there is a face made of grey granite which symbolises the game society. Between them there is a slab made of polished steel which is to reflect both elements on its sides. The author of the project of the monument named “Worlds Within a World" is Sigurdur Gudmundsson. This artist made it in cooperation with art directors from CCP Games studio. The time capsule - a laptop with the messages and videos posted by players – was buried under the obelisk.
