RUINS OF ANCIENT UNIVERSITY IN INDIA

indieThe complex of buildings was found during archaeological works which are being carried out in the area of a Buddhist monastery in Telhara in the region of Bihar, in the north-east part of the country, near the border with Nepal.

Those stone buildings are supposed to have been raised near 5th century and they served as a scientific centre. After previous discoveries, that is the remains of ancient universities from 4th century (Nalanda) and 8th century (Vikramshila), this discovery is the third oldest university in the country. The university was founded during the reign of the Gupta dynasty. This period is believed to have been the golden era of cultural development of the empire.

Then, science, including astronomy and mathematics, developed, which contributed to establishing new education centres. The remains of the ancient university were found during archaeological works carried out in the depth of 14 metres. Currently, further works in the area of the Buddhist monastery in Telhara are being carried out. During another stage several statues made of stone and bronze have been discovered. The ruins have been recently visited by Amartya Sen. The Noble Prize Laureate in the field of economics in 1998 was brought up in the family of Indian academics and was greatly impressed with those ancient ruins.
