THE OLDEST TOWN IN EUROPE?

Najstarsze miasto Europy odkryto w BułgariiSome important archeological events occurred in 2012. The statue made of granite was found in Egypt, and the mosaic from Roman times was found in Turkey. The most precious findings, however, seem to come from Bulgaria. Was the oldest town in Europe founded there?

It seems so. While digging the archeologists found parts of gates and of ritual stone cemetery. The settlement was surrounded by a wall made of stone blocks. The ancient city was situated near the town of Prowadia in the north-eastern part of Bulgaria. After first expertizes it has been found out that the town had been established about 1,500 years before the Mycenaean civilization started in Greece! During the diggings, which have been taking place since 2005, the above mentioned wall made of stone blocks, the ruins of a two-floor house and a ritual cemetery have been found.

It seems that these are the oldest and the biggest buildings made of stone which exist in Europe till today. The Roman mosaic was found as a result of diggings in the center of Sofia. A stone mosaic from ca. 4th century takes 40 square meters. According to the early studies, it was most probably a part of a floor of a big basilica. Building this huge basilica shows how important the town of Ulepia Serdica was. The ancient town was established by the Romans in 29 AD in the place of a Thracian settlement Serdika. Such findings will soon become another attraction for tourists.
